Jet Chang scored a game-high 19 points to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii over Cal State San Bernardino 77-58 in an NCAA Division II West Regional semifinal of the men's basketball tournament yesterday in Bellingham, Wash.

Junior forward Marques Whippy added 17 points and JR Buensuceso had 16 points and four steals for the Seasiders (22-5), who won their 15th straight game and advanced to their third straight NCAA Division II round of 16.

BYUH, the No. 6 seed in the region, will face Cal Poly Pomona in the regional final tomorow for the second straight season.

“;We would love to advance further (this year),”; said BYUH coach Ken Wagner. “;We're hoping the third time's the charm.”;

BYUH led 27-22 with 4 minutes, 19 seconds left in the first half against CSSB before going on a 12-0 run—five by Chang—to go into the break with a 39-22 lead.

“;Coach told me if I got the opportunity to keep attacking the rim and penetrate,”; Chang said. “;The team just kept finding me and passed to me, and I took it.”;

Coyotes coach Jeff Oliver called the late first-half run by the Seasiders the “;turning point”; in the game.

“;They weren't preseason No. 1 by fluke,”; Oliver said. “;They're very talented. They're not playing like a sixth seed.”;

Senior center Lucas Alves added 14 points and six rebounds for the Seasiders.

The Seasiders held the Coyotes to 8-for-26 shooting from the field in the first half and 37.9 percent for the game.

“;We played fantastic defense,”; said Wagner. “;Our defense caused a lot of turnovers (23) leading to (30) points.”;

Even after playing back-to-back elimination games on the road, the Seasiders are looking to make it to the D-II elite eight.

“;Physically, we're getting kinda tired, but we're getting excited because we (won),”; said Chang. “;Everyone will be ready for tomorrow.”;

After the heartbreaking loss to Pomona at the buzzer in last year's regional final in Laie, the Seasiders feel confident going into the rematch with the fourth-seeded Broncos (24-6), who beat top-seeded Western Washington 76-75 in overtime in the second semifinal last night.

“;We've been here before,”; Buensuceso said. “;We got here last year and the difference now is we're more mature, not just taking it for granted.”;

Wagner, who gave his team the day off today, feels good going into tomorrow.

“;We just have to stick to what we've been doing all season,”; he said. “;At this point, you can't start changing what you're doing. You just have to stick with what got you where you are.”;
