Wahine split 2 in tournament

Stephanie Ricketts' first home run of her career wasn't enough as Hawaii lost to DePaul 6-2 on Day 2 of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. The Blue Demons pulled away in the seventh, scoring three unearned runs.

Bree Brown struck out 13. Jenna Rodriguez went 2-for-3 for Hawaii and Kaia Parnaby (9-4) took the loss after going just 3 1/3 innings.

After pool play concluded, Hawaii was given the second seed and defeated Troy 7-3. Ricketts (7-5) notched the complete game win as Melissa Gonzalez and Kelly Majam hit homers.

With the win, UH (17-9) moves into tomorrow's championship game at 10 a.m. against DePaul, while the third-place game features Troy and Loyola Marymount.

Divers fail to advance

Both the UH men's and women's diving teams failed to qualify during the final day of competition at the NCAA Zone E diving championships in Austin, Texas.

Stephanie De Lima was on the outside looking in, as she finished seventh overall. Only the top six qualified.

The top men's diver was Douglas Cohen, who placed 17th.

QB Club welcomes Wales, Shimamoto

Victor Wales and Dean Shimamoto are the guest speakers for the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon tomorrow.

Wales is in his fourth year at the helm of the swimming program at the University of Hawaii. Last year, his men's team finished second in Conference USA, while the women's team took third in the WAC Championships. He will also discuss his recruiting class.

Shimamoto, in his first year as head coach after a long tenure as an assistant under Mark “;Doc”; Mugiishi, led the 'Iolani boys basketball program to its first state title since 2006. In addition to coaching, he is working on his graduate degree at UH and is an entrepreneur.

Lunch begins at 11:30 at the Maple Garden Restaurant, with a noon start time for the program. The public is welcome.

HPU softball blanks BYUH twice

Sixth-rankedHawaii Pacific completed another doubleheader sweep against Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday at Howard A. Okita Field.

Game 1 was close until the fourth, as the Sea Warriors scored three times before adding four insurance runs in the fifth to take the eight-run rule-victory 8-0. Caira Pires had had two hits and Chante Tesoro drove in three runs, while Sherise Musquiz pitched a complete-game three hitter for the Sea Warriors (17-1, 10-1).

The bats for HPU stayed hot in the second game as the Sea Warriors used a five-run second inning to blank the Seasiders 5-0. Ciera Senas had two hits and drove in two, while Ashley Valine recorded her sixth win of the season with a complete-game three-hitter.

The Seasiders (0-20, 0-12) were held to six hits over the two games.

Chaminade splits doubleheader

Chaminade lost the first game 5-4 and avenged the loss with an 8-3 win in Game 2 at Central Oahu Regional Park against Academy of Art.

Chaminade entered the home half of the seventh down five and came up just one run short of going into extra innings. 'Swords pitcher Kelly Korras (4-3) took the loss after giving up nine hits.

Chaminade (12-10) struck first in Game 2 with a 3-run first inning and never looked back. Kasye Lalau pitched a complete game for her fourth win on the season.

The two teams square off in another doubleheader today at CORP, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.

Vulcan softball takes 2

Hawaii Hilo defeated Notre Dame de Namur in a doubleheader yesterday, winning 4-0 in the first game and then needing nine innings to take the second game 3-2.

The first game saw Amber Waracka strike out five and scatter two hits for the complete-game victory. Of Hilo's four runs, only one was earned. Amanda Tellez, Aisha Sueda and Dana Lee each had two hits.

In Game 2, UH-Hilo (16-5, 12-4) forced extra innings after Emily Heinemann scored on an Aisha Sueda double in the seventh. They scored the game-winning run in the ninth after Kanani Numata tripled and then came home after Jessica Schatz reached base on an error by the third baseman. Waracka (9-1) came on in relief to register the win.

Notre Dame de Namur dropped to 4-14 overall, 2-8 in conference.
