Sovereignty film screens at UH
The award-winning documentary film “;Hawaii a Voice for Sovereignty,”; will screen at 5 p.m. today at Spalding Auditorium on the University of Hawaii-Manoa campus, as part of the Indigenous Wisdom Series.
The 84-minute film, directed by photojournalist Catherine Bauknight, explores the culture of the native Hawaiians and their connection to the land. It also covers their struggle to regain sovereign rights and lands lost after the 1893 overthrow.
Hawaiian scholar Haunani-Kay Trask, professor Kaleikoa Ka'eo, state Sen. Kalani English and Bumpy Kanahele, among others, are featured in the film.

Forum focuses on 'Food Inc.'

Kokua Market and the University of Hawaii's Office of Public Health Studies are co-sponsoring a screening at 6 p.m. Tuesday, to be followed by a panel discussion. The event will be held in the Biomed building B103.

Young-playwright contest begins
The Actors Group and VSA arts of Hawaii-Pacific invites middle- and high-school students to submit plays about the impact of disabilities.
A selection of entries will be professionally produced and staged in August as part of the Young Playwrights Festival. One play will be entered into the VSA arts Playwright Discovery Call for Scripts National Competition. Plays must be submitted by April 1. Visit taghawaii.net.

Students' photos sought for resort
Hawaii Arts Alliance and Walt Disney Parks invite students in elementary through high school to submit photographs that reflect their version of Hawaii's beauty and the beauty in their everyday lives.
Some 150 submissions will be incorporated into a collage that will be displayed at Aulani, the Disney resort at Ko Olina that is scheduled to open its first phase in 2011.
Students interested in the project, titled the “;Children's Digital Image Rainbow,”; can visit hawaiiartsalliance.org/schoolphotocontest or submit a digital image on disc to Hawaii Arts Alliance, attn: Disney Photo Contest, P.O. Box 3948, Honolulu 96812. Submissions will be accepted until May 15.
ISLE ART IN BIG APPLE
» Debra Drexler, the University of Hawaii art department's chairwoman of the drawing and painting program, has curated a show in New York of contemporary art by Hawaii and Hawaii-inspired artists.
“;Out of Hawaii: Contemporary Art from the Edge of the World”; is on exhibit through Friday at the Gershwin Hotel as part of “;Pool Art Fair New York 2010.”; The show, which opened March 5, was organized to introduce Hawaii contemporary art to New York City.
Local artists in the show include Drexler, Mary Babcock, Charles Cohan, Gaye Chan, Scott Groenger, Chae Ho Lee, Wendy Kawabata, Yida Wang, Liam Davis, Isaac Parker, Jodi Endicott, Suzanne Wolfe, Michele Zalopany, Peggy Cyphers and Peter Chamberlain.
» Kailua artist Virginia Carabelli has been invited to the prestigious juried show “;Wide Open,”; hosted by BWAC galleries in New York.
The show, which opened yesterday, includes her diptych that was selected by jurors that include one from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Galleria Lelong in Chelsea, N.Y.
Carabelli won the Reuben Tam Award at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' “;Artists of Hawaii 2009.”;
