Man critically hurt after 20-foot fall
A man who appeared to be in his 50s was in critical condition after falling about 20 feet from a building near the airport.
Paramedics responded to a call from Ualena Street about 8 a.m. yesterday and treated the man, who was unresponsive, said Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman, in an e-mail.
Firefighters douse Big Isle brush fire
Big Island firefighters contained a 630-acre brush fire in Kawaihae yesterday but planned to stay overnight to monitor smoldering hot spots.
Firefighters contained the fire at about 4 p.m. yesterday, said Hawaii County Fire Department Battalion Chief Reuben Chun. The fire started Friday shortly before 1 p.m. near Kawaihae Road and led to the evacuation of about a dozen residents of Kawaihae Village, the Kawaihae transitional housing and campers at Spencer Beach Park.
No one was injured and no structures were damaged in the fire, which also closed Kawaihae Road and also affected tourists at the Hapuna Prince hotel.
Helicopter plucks hiker from trail
Firefighters yesterday airlifted a woman from a hiking trail in Waianae after friends reported her missing.
Firefighters entered the Waianae Kai Trail at the end of Waianae Valley Road and searched by helicopter after receiving a call from the woman's hiking partners about 3:10 p.m. because they could not find her, said Fire Capt. Debbi Eleneki. Firefighters located the woman on the trail after about an hour of searching. She was not injured.
Ukulele used in assault, police say
A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault by ukulele in Waipahu, police said.
The man and his 38-year-old girlfriend were in an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation about 2:30 a.m. Friday when the man punched the woman, then hit her with the instrument, causing injuries, police said.
The man was arrested on Lelepua Street in Waipio on suspicion of second-degree assault and abuse.
