Speed was a factor in a single-truck crash that killed a 23-year-old Waianae man yesterday afternoon on Waianae Valley Road, police said.
Police said the man's 1998 Chevy S-10 pickup truck swerved off the right side of the roadway near Plantation Road and hit a heavy wooden utility pole about 1:30 p.m.
Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman, said the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:05 p.m.
Police said the man, who was alone in the truck, was wearing his seat belt, and his airbag deployed. He was Oahu's 14th traffic fatality this year compared to 16 at this time last year.
The Medical Examiner had not released the man's identity as of last night.
