Punahou sets the pace
POSTED: Saturday, March 13, 2010
Reece Toma and Brent Fukushima hit back-to-back home runs in a four-run sixth inning, helping the Punahou baseball team to its first victory of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season with 6-0 shutout yesterday over 'Iolani at the Raiders' field.
Some 300 fans watched Alakai Aglipay hold 'Iolani to two hits in his first pitching appearance in three years.
“;I thought that our team played solid defense,”; Aglipay said. I trusted our offense and that kept me up the whole game.”;
“;My arm felt pretty good. I haven't pitched in two years because I had injured my arm ... Now I can contribute a lot more to the team besides DH duties.”;
With the win, Punahou improved to 1-0-1. The season opener last Saturday ended in a 9-9 tie with Kamehameha due to darkness.
Punahou coach Eric Kadooka says this win was important in helping his team secure another berth to the state championships.
“;This was a big game for us, winning on our rival's field,”; Kadooka said. “;Each game for us is critical in our efforts to reach the state tourney.”;
Additionally, Kadooka says he knows fans are behind his team and that support continues to motivate his team to perform its best.
“;We had a lot of our fans here today,”; Kadooka noted. “;I'm glad we played worthy enough for those who traveled over to 'Iolani to see us.”;
Punahou wasted no time taking the lead with a run scored by Michael Suiter in the first inning. The center fielder led off with a single and eventually scored off an Iolani error.
Aglipay helped his cause with a leadoff single in the fourth inning. That hit led to a run when Ryan Yamane drove in pinch runner Roy Fuchigami with a single through the infield.
Punahou's bats came alive in the sixth inning. Toma started off the home run parade with a three-run blast over the left-field fence. Fukushima followed with a solo homer over the right-field fence to stretch Punahou's lead to the final 6-0.
In the seventh inning, 'Iolani put pressure on Aglipay with runners on first and third. But 'Iolani hit into a double play to end the game.
'Iolani coach Jason Arakaki said, “;We got to give them (Punahou) credit. They got the big hits when they needed them and we didn't.”;
