BYUH moves on, HPU eliminated

It didn't matter that the game was sloppy or that his team was sluggish. Brigham Young-Hawaii senior Lucas Alves got what he wanted — to walk out of Sam Carter Gym with a victory in yesterday's quarterfinal of the NCAA Division II West Regional men's basketball tournament in Bellingham, Wash.
Alves did his part, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore guard Jet Chang added 15 points as the sixth-seeded Seasiders held off third-seeded Seattle Pacific 76-74 for their 14th consecutive victory. BYUH (21-5) advances to today's semifinal against No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino (23-7) at 3 p.m. Hawaii time. CSSB, the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament champion, advanced with a 75-66 win over Humbolt State.
“;We didn't play good at all,”; Alves said after knocking off the Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion. “;We just wanted to get out of there with a win, even if it was by a half-point.”;
Some 90 miles down the road in Seattle, the Pacific West women's representative didn't fare as well. Hawaii Pacific's first postseason appearance was a brief one, as the Sea Warriors were eliminated by host and top-seeded Seattle Pacific 65-52 in a regional quarterfinal at Brougham Pavilion.
Mana Hopkins scored 16 and Jazzmin Awa-Williams added 11 for HPU (18-7).
“;I thought we came out a little tentative and missed a lot of shots we normally make,”; HPU coach Jeff Harada said. “;But we played a great team in their building, and hats off to them. I'm proud of the girls, and this loss does not take away from the great season they had.”;
While the Sea Warriors were unable to beat the Falcons, BYUH finally was able to, topping Seattle Pacific for the first time in eight tries. It was anything but easy.
Chang completed a three-point play with 76 seconds left to give the Seasiders their biggest lead at 70-60. The Falcons battled back, helped by BYUH's suddenly cold free-throw shooting.
The Seasiders went 1-for-6 from the line, while Seattle Pacific hit eight of nine in pulling to 72-70 with 7 seconds to go. BYUH held on as Anthony Reilly sank both free throws with 3 seconds remaining to secure the win.
Rory Patterson added 12 points and Garrett Sandberg came off the bench for 11 points and 10 rebounds for the BYUH.
“;It was a good win,”; Seasiders coach Ken Wagner said. “;Lucas did a real nice job and Jet didn't play well, but he hit some huge big-time shots when we needed it. We were fortunate to win.”;
Seattle Pacific was led by Region Player of the Year Chris Banchero's 22 points. The Falcons had been ranked No. 1 in the region before losing their final two regular-season games.
“;We learned a lesson,”; SPU coach Ryan Looney said. “;We ended up with a lower seed, and then we had to match up with what I feel is the most talented team in the tournament.”;
