Danielson on national A2 team

Hawaii sophomore hitter Kanani Danielson has been selected to play for USA Volleyball's national women's senior A2 team.

The All-American was among 174 players invited to—and 41 outside hitters evaluated at—last month's open tryout at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was one of 24 named to the team that is scheduled to begin training May 24 in Phoenix.

The A2 team is for players who have collegiate eligibility remaining. The squad also will compete at next month's USA Adult Open Championships in Phoenix.

Gatorade honor to Lunas' Viela

Lahainaluna junior guard Maiki Viela was named the Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year for Hawaii yesterday.

Viela led the Lunas to the Division I state title, averaging 20.3 points during the state tournament, including 29 points in the semifinal upset of Punahou. It was the first state girls basketball championship for any Maui school.

Viela is now eligible for the national award that will be announced later this month.

HPU takes 2 in men's tennis

The fifth-ranked Hawaii Pacific men's tennis team knocked off two Top 40 progams yesterday, in Pomona, Calif.

The Sea Warriors beat No. 10 Rollins 5-1, losing at No. 1 singles when Jeff Morris beat Nikola Petrove, 6-4, 6-4. HPU (11-1) then shut out No. 40 Western New Mexico 7-0, dropping a combined 18 sets in the seven matches that were completed.
