Wilson in UH basketball mix?

Hawaii basketball color commentator and former Rainbow Warriors player Artie Wilson is paying close attention to the vacant UH basketball coaching position.

Did he apply? Not yet, he says.

“;I've talked to people, and people have talked to me, but there's been nothing concrete yet,”; said Wilson, who's been around the program since his playing days in the 1970s. “;I think I have a passion and a love for the university ... Right now my interest is in the program having as much success as possible.

“;You probably could say that I wouldn't rule (applying) out.”;

UH tennis teams beaten on road

The Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams both lost road matches yesterday. The No. 41 Rainbow Warriors lost to No. 69 Oklahoma State in Las Vegas, while the Rainbow Wahine fell 6-1 to host UC Santa Barbara.

In a rematch of last year's NCAA tournament first-round contest won by Hawaii, the Warriors (7-5) opened with an upset of 12th-ranked Aleksy Bessonov and Oleksandr Nedovyesov by Andreas Weber and Philipp Eberhard at No. 1 doubles. UH won the overall doubles point, but the Cowboys (4-4) answered by winning four of the six singles matches, with two of the losses coming in three sets.

In Santa Barbara, Calif., the Rainbow Wahine's lone win came at No. 3 singles when Katarina Poljakova rallied past Jordan Dockendorf 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Hawaii dropped to 2-10.

Seasider women roll in tennis

The third-ranked Brigham Young Hawaii women's tennis team won its 10th straight yesterday, sweeping Bloomsburg (Pa.) 9-0 at the BYUH courts.

The Seasiders (10-0) won all six singles matches in straight sets, led by Yuan Jia's 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles over the Huskies' Katie Hasyn.

» The 12th-ranked Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team also remained unbeaten, upping its record to 7-0 when beating No. 11 Clayton State 6-3 at the Central Oahu Regional Park tennis complex.

The Sea Warriors set up the victory by taking all three doubles matches, including an upset at No. 1. The 13th-ranked pair of Ingrid Cseh and Zora Vickova outlasted seventh-ranked Viktorya Semyrodenko and Katherine White 9-8, winning the tiebreaker 8-6.

» Brigham Young-Hawaii's No. 3 men's doubles team of Thomas Wu and Diego Miranda won their match 8-0 yesterday and the Seasiders (9-1) shut out Bloomsburg (Pa.) 9-0 in Laie.

HPU cheerleaders on Team USA

Eight members of the Hawaii Pacific cheerleading team were selected to the USA Cheer All-Girl Team.

Lauren Loeb, Emily Myers, Savanna Sibley, Heather Turner, Chelsey Kannan, Stephanie Bibby, Brittany Barry, and Ashley Lewis will be part of the team that represents the U.S. at next month's ICU World Championship in Florida.

HPU is the defending Division II national champion in large co-ed and all-girl team cheering, and dance team. The three Sea Warriors squads and their small coed team will also compete next month in Florida.
