Police seek man who robbed Salt Lake bank
Police are looking for a man who robbed the American Savings Bank at 848 Ala Lilikoi St. in Salt Lake.
The man entered the bank at about 9:10 a.m. yesterday, approached the teller wearing a mask and wielding a handgun, and demanded money. He fled in a four-door compact vehicle on Salt Lake Boulevard, police said.
He is described as in his 20s to 30s, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, 120 pounds, wearing a camouflage baseball cap, blue dress shirt, khaki pants, white shoes and a blue mask.
Search for missing male surfer to continue
Ocean safety, fire and Coast Guard personnel searched yesterday evening for a missing surfer in rough and choppy waters off Laniakea Beach Park on the North Shore.
The surfer, an Asian visitor in his mid-30s, was last seen at 5 p.m. yesterday wearing black shorts and was reported missing by a woman, authorities said.
Ocean safety and fire rescue personnel will continue their search at first light today. They suspended their search at 7:30 p.m. yesterday due to darkness. The Coast Guard crews were planning to search throughout last night. A helicopter took off from Barbers Point Air Station at 6:15 p.m. yesterday. Lifeguards were notified at 4:55 p.m. that the man was missing.
No one at home when fire destroys apartment
No one was injured when fire destroyed a Makiki one-bedroom apartment yesterday afternoon.
Construction workers from a building project next door broke into the apartment's back door to check for anyone inside, calling out but not entering the apartment due to the heavy smoke, the Fire Department said.
No one was home at the time of the 12:42 p.m. blaze at 1419 Ernest St. Damage was estimated at $150,000.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced resident with housing and personal needs.
