No one at home when fire destroys apartment

No one was injured when fire destroyed a Makiki one-bedroom apartment yesterday afternoon.

Construction workers from a building project next door broke into the apartment's back door to check for anyone inside, calling out but not entering the apartment due to the heavy smoke, the Fire Department said.

No one was home at the time of the 12:42 p.m. blaze at 1419 Ernest St. Damage was estimated at $150,000.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced resident with housing and personal needs.
