Foodbank competes for $1 million
Thanks to philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein, the Hawaii Foodbank could be among nonprofit food agencies across the nation to receive a portion of a million-dollar donation.
Between now and April 30, the more money the Hawaii Foodbank raises, the bigger the portion of that overall million dollars will come to the islands.
Feinstein is the founder of the Feinstein Foundation, dedicated to relieving hunger. To donate, call 836-3600 or visit the food bank online.
Lunch, book deal in Kapahulu

Hiura's book is a guide to 100 common items in local cuisine.
It covers the early Polynesians to the chefs of fusion cuisine and includes the food of immigrant plantation workers, wartime military and modern entrepreneurs.
Haili's Hawaiian Foods operates the Kapahulu restaurant as well as a parking-lot lunch wagon at Ward Centre.

Wining and dining return to d.k
Edmeades Vineyards' winemaker Van Williamson returns to d.k Steak House on March 25 for a dinner pairing the vineyards' prize zinfandels with a four-course menu designed by executive chef Jason Miyasaki.
The pairings will feature a Red Wine-Braised Oxtail Tortellini (with the 2007 Mendocino), Big Island Red Veal Sausage and Nalo Green Salad (2006 Zeni), Garlic and Herb-Marinated Maui Cattle Co. Ribeye Steak (2007 Ciapusci Vineyard) and a Warm Chocolate Bomb of bittersweet chocolate cake, semisweet ganache and mint chocolate chip ice cream (2005 Perli Vineyard).
Cost is $75. The restaurant is in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

Fundraiser to feature 70 brews
The Kona Brewers Festival will celebrate its 15th anniversary Saturday with 70 types of ales and lagers and island-style cuisine from 25 Hawaii chefs.
The festival, 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel luau grounds, is a fundraiser for various environmental, educational and cultural organizations on the Big Island. Call 331-3033 or visit konabrewersfestival.com.
Kihei cook chosen chicken champ
Cooking champ Kristine Snyder of Kihei was the grand-prize winner at the 21st Annual Winning Taste Recipe Contest.
Snyder's Sweet Chili Chicken won top honors at in the cook-off sponsored by chicken producer Pilgrim's Pride.
Snyder has been entering food contests for 10 years and has won several contests including the National Chicken Cooking Contest, Sutter Home's Build a Better Burger and LG's Life Tastes Good. Snyder was also a semifinalist in the 2000 Pillsbury Bake-Off.
