Military investigators have identified a missing boater whose body was discovered yesterday in waters off the Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe.

The man was last seen alive floating in a life raft in rough surf about 55 yards offshore of Pyramid Rock Beach Friday night.

Marines spokesman Maj. Alan Crouch said the name of the man is not being released until next of kin are notified. He said the man was not a Marine.

Lifeguards in snorkeling gear recovered the body of a man in his 30s about 65 feet from shore at about 1:40 p.m. yesterday.

The search for the man began Friday night when the Marine base's air station tower spotted flares near Pyramid Rock.

Rescue crews from the Marine base saw a man in his 30s in a life raft but were unable to reach him because of high surf.

A Coast Guard helicopter searched through the night and was joined yesterday morning by a C-130 plane, a Honolulu Fire Department helicopter and federal firefighters. Military police searched overnight along the shore with dogs.

They recovered the life raft on the beach last night containing a flare gun and a small waterproof box.

Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer 3rd Class Luke Clayton said yesterday there was a “;field of debris in the water.”; As of yesterday afternoon, there had been no reports of a missing boater.
