Rainbow Wahine outhit Seattle
Hawaii overpowered Seattle 9-1 in a mercy-rule-shortened five-inning game in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium last night.
Kanani Pu'u-Warren hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning and Melissa Gonzalez added a three-run blast in the five-run fourth.
Stephanie Ricketts (4-3) scattered four hits and struck out a season-high 10 to notch the win.
In the tourney opener, Danielle Lawrie tossed a two-hit shutout to lead top-ranked Washington over East Carolina 6-0.
The tournament continues today with the Rainbow Wahine (10-6) taking on East Carolina and Washington, the reigning Women's College World Series champion.
UNLV swats Hawaii tennis
The Hawaii men's tennis team dropped its fourth road match of the year yesterday, falling to No. 71 UNLV 6-1 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.
Sophomore Leo Rosenberg picked up the lone point for the Warriors at No. 4 singles, running his record to 8-0 in dual matches with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Matthew Kunkel.
No. 47 Hawaii (5-4) faces No. 70 Marquette today.
Bartels second in Gold Coast
Melanie Bartels finished second to reigning three-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore in the finals of the ASP Roxy Pro Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, earlier today.
Gilmore defended her title in the opening event of the 2010 ASP World Tour in 2- to 3-foot waves, besting Bartels, 27, of Makaha at Snapper Rocks.
The North Shore's Coco Ho, 19, last year's rookie of the year, fell to Gilmore in the semifinals.
