Enos lifts Warriors into all-ILH final
POSTED: Saturday, March 06, 2010
Their biggest game of the year came down to super sophomores.
Kamehameha's soph was just a wee bit better. Dyrbe Enos sank two free throws with 2.4 seconds left to seal a 47-43 win for Kamehameha over Punahou in the semifinals of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Enos' clutch shots came just 28 seconds after he bricked the front end of a 1-and-1, giving Punahou new life. However, Punahou sophomore Malik Johnson missed a 5-foot bank shot—with Micah Christenson defending—with 5 seconds left. The rebound was corralled by Enos at midcourt, and he was fouled immediately.
“;You just don't think about it,”; he said. “;It's just regular free throws that you practice every day.”;
Kamehameha (26-6), the defending state champion, will meet top-seeded 'Iolani today at 7 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center for the crown. 'Iolani has won three of four matchups with Kamehameha, including 67-63 and 50-49 victories late in the regular season.
Including a play-in game at Honokaa on Monday, the Warriors have played four games in five nights.
“;These kids got heart. Nothing daunts them,”; Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said, noting the steady leadership of senior point guard Chaz Bajet, who returned this week from a knee injury.
Last night, Christenson led Kamehameha with 13 points, six rebounds and five steals. Frank Ho was a huge factor off the bench, scoring 10 of his 11 points during a second-quarter comeback.
“;Frankie gave us a big lift, hitting 3s and getting to the line,”; Nakanishi said.
“;I went in and gave everything I had,”; Ho said, munching on a postgame macadamia nut cookie. “;We weren't afraid of nobody tonight.”;
Henry Cassiday had 13 points and DeForest Buckner, Punahou's other elite sophomore, had 10 points and 11 boards. Johnson finished with eight points and four caroms.
Punahou (23-5) shot 54 percent against Kamehameha's 2-3 zone defense, but was just 0-for-2 at the foul line and turned the ball over 17 times.
The storied rivals had met four previous times this season—Kamehameha won the final of the Jim Alegre Invitational, but Punahou won two of three in league play.
