Navy shuffles leadership at Pearl and Camp Smith

Rear Adm. Timothy M. Giardina will be assigned as deputy commander and chief of staff for the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.

; Giardina, a 1979 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is currently serving as director of readiness and training at U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.

The Pentagon also announced that Rear Adm. Charles W. Martoglio, currently serving as director of operations for the Pacific Command at Camp Smith, will be the new chief of staff for the U.S. European Command in Germany.

Giardina has served as commander of Submarine Group Trident, Submarine Group 9 and Submarine Group 10, where he was responsible for 18 attack and ballistic missile submarines. As a career submarine officer, Giardina has served on both fast-attack and ballistic missile submarines in both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets.

He commanded the ballistic missile submarine USS Kentucky from 1996 until 1999 and led Submarine Squadron 17 in Bangor, Wash., which included 10 Trident submarines, from July 2001 to July 2003.

Martoglio graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1978. He command the destroyer USS Fitzgerald during the ship's first deployment to the Persian Gulf in 1997. Martoglio served as commander of Destroyer Squadron 23 and as sea combat commander for the Nimitz Strike Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Most recently, Martoglio commanded Carrier Strike Group 7 and the Ronald Reagan Strike Group during its 2007 deployment to the western Pacific.
