HPU men drop heartbreaker

The Hawaii Pacific men's basketball team's hopes of winning the PacWest Conference were dealt a crushing blow after falling to Grand Canyon 100-91 in double overtime at Antelope Gym in Phoenix.

Mike Helton led all scorers with 30 points but it was not enough for the Sea Warriors who fell to 19-6 overall and 11-3 in the PacWest.

Brad Carroll and T.J. Benson each recorded 20 points to lead the way for the Antelopes as they improved to 15-16 for the season and 9-6 in the PacWest.

» Tsung-Hsien Chang went 10-for-13 from the field on his way to scoring 29 points as Brigham Young Hawaii cruised past Academy of Art University 99-69 at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco.

Jonathan Burnett recorded a double-double for the Urban Knights with 18 points and 12 rebounds as they fell to 0-26 overall and 0-16 in the PacWest.

Lucas Alves contributed 17 points as the Seasiders improved to 18-5 for the season and 12-2 in the PacWest.

» Chaminade played solid defense, holding Notre Dame De Namur to 34 percent shooting for the game as the Silverswords won 56-43 at Gleason Gym in Belmont, Calif.

Shane Hanson came out strong for the Silverswords with 16 points and six rebounds as they improved to 9-14 for the season and 6-8 in the PacWest.

Trent Henwood had 13 points to lead the Argos as they fell to 4-22 and 2-13 in PacWest play.

» Dixie State dominated the second half as the Red Storm defeated Hawaii-Hilo 80-48 at Burns Arena in St. George, Utah.

Tom Whitehead had 12 points and five rebounds as the Red Storm improved to 19-5 overall and 13-2 in the PacWest.

Justin Smith led all scorers with 14 points but the Vulcans came up short falling to 13-11 for the season and 7-7 in the PacWest.

Red Storm whips Vulcans

Dixie State jumped out to an early 18-point halftime lead and didn't look back as the Red Storm women cruised to victory over Hawaii-Hilo 99-56 at the Burns Arena in St. George, Utah.

Deana Daniels led the way for the Red Storm with a triple-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 12 steals, while teammate Johnna Brown contributed with 16 points and seven assists as they improved to 16-8 for the season and 12-3 in the PacWest.

Kirsty Imai was the only Vulcan player to record double-digit points with 10 as Hawaii-Hilo fell to 7-18 overall and 4-10 in the PacWest.

» The Academy of Art University forced 28 turnovers as the Urban Knights women defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii 66-49 at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco.

Lorraine Etchell was one of four Urban Knights to score in double figures with 17 points as they improved to 10-17 for the season and 6-10 in the PacWest.

The Seasiders struggled from the free-throw line shooting 33 percent for the game as they fell to 9-15 and 5-9 in the PacWest.

Sea Warriors take tri-match

Hawaii Pacific University took a golf tri-match victory over BYU-Hawaii and Chaminade yesterday at the Kaneohe Klipper Course.

The Sea Warriors shot a low team score of 318, nudging the Seasiders by two shots. The Silverswords came in at 365.

Conner Rumpf and Andrew Alston were tied for low individual score at 76.

Ho, Gilmore in surf showdown

The ASP women's world tour Roxy Pro semifinals have been set with Coco Ho and Stephanie Gilmore set to square off in the first semifinal.

Chelsea Hedges and Melanie Bartels will meet in the second semifinal of the event.

» Taj Burrow of Australia defeated Jordy Smith of South Africa in the final heat of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast event.

Bobby Martinez and Bane Reynolds of the United States finished tied for third.
