Kamehameha handles Campbell

So far, so good for the busy Kamehameha Warriors.

Micah Christenson's 23 points and 12 rebounds powered the defending state champions to a 67-53 victory over Campbell in Division I opening-round action of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships at McKinley Student Council Gym.

“;We didn't have our best game, but we survived and advanced,”; Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said.

Kamehameha will meet second-seeded Moanalua tonight at McKinley. Moanalua is riding a 12-game win streak.

“;I'll tell you what, we've got to get back on defense. Moanalua's fresh. We have to make them earn every point,”; Nakanishi said.

The two powerhouses have not met this season.

“;They're a real good team,”; Christenson said. “;We've got to bring our best. They're used to this gym.”;

The Warriors (22-6) showed no ill effects of a busy stretch of basketball. After winning the ILH's third-place playoff tourney last week, they boarded a plane on Monday and traveled to the Big Island, where they beat Honokaa for a state-tourney berth.

Last night, they took care of business early, jumping to a commanding 16-5 lead. Kamehameha used a weave offense and a few wrinkles to break down Campbell's 1-2-2 zone and led 36-23 at the half.

“;We knew the 1-2-2 was coming. We're a 3-point shooting team, but we did a decent job getting the ball to the rack,”; Nakanishi said. “;We tried to do some different things, some flashes, some picks.”;

Dyrbe Enos connected on a 3-pointer to start the second half and added two foul shots as Kamehameha opened a 48-29 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Sabers, sparked by the rebounding and passing of Christian Storment, used a 13-2 run to get within striking distance. Storment's steal and feed to Manuel for a layup brought Campbell to within 50-42 shortly before the end of the third.

Kamehameha's 2-3 zone and man-to-man defenses proved resilient, however, and the Sabers got no closer than 10 points the rest of the night.

Charlton Tang hustled for 17 points and seven rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Kamehameha had a 34-29 edge on the boards.

Manuel led Campbell (19-10) with 17 points, including 8-for-10 shooting at the foul line, but committed 10 turnovers against a smothering defense. Fouina Haskins added 13 points, and Storment finished with seven points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

The Sabers shot 46 percent from the field (20-for-44), but were just 1-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc and committed 20 turnovers.

Kamehameha shot 40 percent (23-for-58) from the field and 73 percent from the foul line (16-for-22).
