Events promote colorful eating

March is Colorectal Cancer Month, and the American Cancer Society says that eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk.

To promote healthful eating, Castle Medical Center, Kapiolani Women's Center and Queen's Medical Center are offering free “;Eat a Rainbow”; cooking demonstrations throughout the month. Space is limited, so register early.

Dinner to benefit Kailua High

The Friends of Kailua High and Luana Hills Country Club have teamed up to create the first of what they hope will be an annual Kailua High School fundraiser, scheduled for March 12.

This dining event features the kitchen wizardry of 1994 graduate Jay Matsukawa, executive chef at the Willows. Included on the menu: Seared Diver Sea Scallop with Apple Wood Smoked Bacon Beurre Blanc, and Hoisin & Ginger Glazed Duck Breast with Shiitake Mushroom Slaw.

Partake in and learn about teatime

Join Tracey Lisch for a casual teatime seminar at A Cup of Tea in Kailua, scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. next Wednesday.

Lisch will talk about varieties of tea and the origins behind the afternoon tea tradition. A traditional afternoon tea tray with assorted sandwiches, desserts and scones will also be served.

» Inspired by a trip to French Polynesia, chef George Mavrothalassitis is offering a “;Back from Bora Bora”; three-course menu at Chef Mavro through March 20. The first course (pictured) is Mavro's version of Poisson Cru, Tahiti's coconut-flavored national dish, made with bigeye ahi; his second course is pineapple-glazed pork; and third is a baked taro pudding with banana ice cream.
