Kessel leads UH-Hilo to split
Shane Kessel went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Hawaii-Hilo baseball team over Grand Canyon 4-3 yesterday in Hilo.
Grand Canyon won the second game of a doubleheader, 7-2. Kessel still had a hot bat in that game, going 2-for-3 to raise his team-leading average to .375.
Tyler Simao picked up the win in the first game for the Vulcans by striking out both batters he faced with the potential go-ahead run on base in the top of the seventh. Grand Canyon had scored all three of its runs in the inning before Simao put out the fire.
Leadoff hitter Ronel Trias was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the frame, then was sacrificed to second by Keoni Manago before Kessel ended the game with his blooper into center field off Brady Wager.
The Vulcans are 5-9, 1-5 in the PacWest, while the Coyotes are 7-7 and 4-2. The teams play another doubleheader today in Hilo.
