Grgas forced to wait to help Warriors again

Steven Grgas didn't get much sleep during the early morning hours yesterday. It had little to do with the tsunami alert.

The Hawaii senior middle was still on a high from the Warriors' upset of Brigham Young on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center, the first win over the Cougars since 2006, Grgas' redshirt season. It was also the first match Grgas had played in more than a month after fracturing his right hand on Jan. 27. He played a key role in the 30-17, 28-30, 31-33, 30-28, 15-10 victory, with four kills, four blocks and an assist.

“;They're always one of the top teams and we hadn't beaten them in a while,”; he said. “;It was a very, very big win for us.”;

He and the rest of the team couldn't wait to try to do it again yesterday at sold-out War Memorial Gym in Maui.

It didn't happen yesterday in Wailuku, but it will tomorrow in Manoa. The teams have rescheduled their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match for 5:30 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Yesterday morning, BYU wasn't comfortable with making the trip to the Valley Isle, where their team hotel had been evacuated and War Memorial was a designated evacuation center, according to Warriors coach Charlie Wade.

“;We were at the airport and BYU wasn't,”; Wade said. “;They wanted to play but weren't comfortable with the situation. At that point, it made no sense of us to go, either.

“;In hindsight, we should have just gotten on the plane and everything would have been fine. But you didn't know that at the time. Too bad because playing in Maui would have been a blast. So now we just move on.”;

BYU spent much of yesterday trying to change its flight back to Utah in order to stay and play Hawaii tomorrow. Today was not an option, as the church-based institution does not compete on Sundays.
