Inmate suspected of stabbing OCCC guard

The Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate accused of stabbing a prison guard with a homemade weapon earlier this week is awaiting trial in the murder of attorney Craig Kimsel.
Police arrested Daniel K. Kahanaoi, 45, at OCCC Wednesday, transported him to Honolulu Police Department headquarters where they booked him for attempted second-degree murder, then returned him to OCCC.
State Department of Public Safety Director Clayton Frank said OCCC officials have moved Kahanaoi from the general population to a segregation unit.
Police have not charged Kahanaoi. He is in custody in the Kimsel murder without the opportunity for bail.
Trial is scheduled for next month. However, Kahanaoi is asking a state judge to push back the start of trial to a later date.
Frank said the 52-year-old correctional sergeant was working at a control station when Kahanaoi approached him and stabbed him in the arm, head and neck with a shank.
The sergeant subdued Kahanaoi with the help of other correctional officers, Frank said.
The sergeant later went to the hospital on his own. Frank said the sergeant reported for work the following day.
Prison officials are investigating the motive for the attack. Frank said he does not believe there was bad blood between the two.
Kahanaoi is awaiting trial for murder, burglary and firearm charges for allegedly fatally shooting Kimsel at the lawyer's Kailua home April 28.
Police said Kahanaoi slipped through the gate of Kimsel's fortified home and shot the lawyer twice. Kahanaoi went there looking for his ex-girlfriend who was hiding in the home. She had a restraining order against him.
