Wie tied for 15th in Singapore

Honolulu's Michelle Wie bounced back from a so-so second round yesterday with a 3-under 69 today and is tied for 15th at the HSBC Women's Champions at the Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore.

Wie trails third-round leaders Juli Inkster (69) and Ai Miyazato (69) by five shots entering tomorrow's final round. Wie is at 2-under 214 through 54 holes of the second LPGA Tour event of 2010.

The Punahou School product carded two bogeys and five birdies, including her final two holes, to play her way into contention. She will return to Stanford next week to complete her second trimester.

 

Medeiros wins StrikeForce debut

Makaha's Yancy Medeiros remained undefeated with a unanimous decision over Raul Castillo last night in the first televised fight of the StrikeForce Challengers event broadcast on Showtime.

Medeiros (8-0) handed Castillo (6-1) his first loss, dominating all three rounds standing while avoiding Castillo's takedown attempts.

“;I'm very excited,”; Medeiros said after the fight. “;I really wanted to represent Hawaii the best I could.”;

Medeiros, who fought at 185 pounds, landed some heavy shots at the end of the first round and then poured it on in Round 2, dominating the standup exchanges.

Medeiros was temporarily slowed in the final round after a low blow forced a break in the fight, but Medeiros recovered to finish strong and win his StrikeForce debut.

Medeiros was an Oahu Interscholastic Association wrestling champion at 189 pounds at Waianae.

 

Hawaii softball earns a split

Hawaii won one, then lost one in a softball doubleheader at the Cathedral City Classic in California yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine outslugged UC Davis 8-5 in the first game behind solo home runs by Jessica Iwata, Kelly Majam and Traci Yoshikawa. Kaia Parnaby tossed 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the save.

Oregon edged Hawaii 4-3 in the second game. Parnaby (5-2) took the complete-game loss, giving up all four Duck runs on 11 hits.

Hawaii (9-5) ends its two-week road trip today with another double-dip against No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 2 Arizona.

 

Wahine track in fifth place

Hawaii sits in fifth place after the second day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at Nampa, Idaho, yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine are tied with Nevada with 19 points, trailing first-place Idaho (44), Utah State (34), Louisiana Tech (30) and New Mexico State (30) heading into today's finals.

Jessica Forrester qualified for the mile final with a time of 5:13.40 and later placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run in 17:53.33.

Senior Sam Whitehall ran the fifth-fastest time in the 800-meter prelims with a 2:17.46 to advance to the finals.

 

Hawaii swim team in second

The Hawaii men's swimming and diving team held onto second place after the third day of the Conference USA Championships at the University of Houston yesterday.

Southern Methodist leads the team standings with 582 points, with UH (534) in second place entering today's final day of competition at the CRWC Natatorium.

Mark Higley captured first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.68, and the team of Ilia Reyes, Sean Reilly, Davis Kane and Mark Higley took second the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking a time of 1:30.05.

UH divers Douglas Cohen (335.50) and Thomas Rugg (305.50) finished second and third in the 3-meter final.

» Stephanie De Lima captured the gold medal in the 1-meter springboard event for the Hawaii women's team at the WAC championships in San Antonio.

The junior from Montreal recorded a winning score of 297.10 after taking the platform event on Wednesday.

Boise State leads the team standings with 420 points, with Hawaii (261) in sixth place entering today's final day of competition at Josh Davis Natatorium.

 

Wahine soccer ties Falcons

Hawaii battled Air Force to a scoreless tie in a women's soccer spring scrimmage at the UH Lower Campus field on Thursday.

Rainbow Wahine goalkeepers Kanani Taaca and Kristina Ehrett combined to shut out the Falcons.

Hawaii Pacific sweeps Dixie State

Hawaii Pacific took two from Dixie State in a PacWest softball doubleheader yesterday in Kaneohe.

Sherise Musquiz (5-0) shut down the fourth-ranked Red Storm 4-2 in a rematch of last year's NCAA West Region championship with a complete-game, seven-strikeout performance at Howard A. Okita Field.

The Sea Warriors (10-0, 2-0 PacWest) completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the second game. Caira Pires cranked a three-run home run to pace HPU.

Dixie State fell to 7-3 (4-2 conference) for the season.

 

Hawaii Pacific swats Chaminade

Hawaii Pacific rallied to beat Chaminade 6-3 in women's tennis at the Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex yesterday.

Chaminade's Yuka Kondo and Tiffany DeVincent upended Hawaii Pacific's 22nd-ranked duo of Ingred Cseh and Zora Vlckova, 8-6.

The Sea Warriors responded by taking five of six singles matches, led by No. 12 Vlckova, who beat Kondo 6-2, 6-4, and No. 40 Mihova, who downed DeVincent 6-2, 6-3.

 

BYUH downs Hawaii-Hilo

No. 27 Brigham Young-Hawaii overwhelmed No. 30 Hawaii-Hilo in men's and women's tennis in Hilo yesterday.

The Seasiders men defeated the Vulcans men 6-2, led by BYUH duo of Rong Ma and Dillon Porter, who beat UH-Hilo's Kevin Tamura and Stephen Royalty 6-1, 6-4.

The No. 3 Seasiders women swatted the Vulcans women 9-0, behind Elwin Li and Yuan Jia, who downed Hilo's Christie Pagatpatan and Anna Hamlim, 8-2.
