UH intrasquad scrimmage on Kauai
POSTED: Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Jim Donovan and Bernard Carvalho played side by side on the Hawaii offensive line in 1982. They teamed up again yesterday to help arrange the Warriors' upcoming spring excursion.
With Donovan now the UH athletic director and Carvalho the mayor of Kauai, the Warriors will make their first visit to the Garden Isle on April 10 for an intrasquad scrimmage.
“;The whole concept is to bring our teams to the neighbor islands,”; Donovan said. “;We believe we play for all of Hawaii.”;
The 2-hour scrimmage is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at Vidinha Stadium with an autograph session to follow. Admission will be free.
The trip marks the second straight year the Warriors are visiting a neighbor island during spring practice. They held a scrimmage on Maui last year.
The UH men's volleyball team will play a match on Maui on Saturday against Brigham Young, and Donovan said the athletic department is looking to hold an event on the Big Island next year.
Donovan credited Hawaiian Airlines' sponsorship for making the Warriors' trip to Kauai financially feasible. Hawaiian Airlines will provide air transportation for the UH travel party of more than 150.
The scrimmage will provide a homecoming for three players from Kauai—safety Kenny Estes, receiver Jett Jasper and defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga.
“;We preach to our players the importance of representing the state of Hawaii and we'll have that opportunity to show our talents to the great people of Kauai,”; UH coach Greg McMackin said in a release.
Kauai community groups and businesses interested in assisting with the event can contact Lenny Rapozo, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, at (808) 241-4455.
