Passion for Chinese pickling

“;Pickle Lady”; Leonora Ching will share Chinese New Year recipes at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library.

Ching will offer free samples during her hourlong presentation about her passion for pickling and preserving fruits, vegetables and even eggs and shrimp.

» Tasting Methodology 102, a beginner's class led by a certified sommelier, helps students expand their wine vocabulary. The class runs 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $20, with Wine Club member discounts.

 

Local baristas compete in L.A.

Honolulu Coffee Co. baristas Row Aczon and Pete Licata will compete in the Western Regional Barista Competition this weekend in Los Angeles.

Contestants are observed for 45 minutes by six judges, with 15 minutes each for setup and cleanup and 15 minutes to serve 12 drinks. Two judges observe the contestant's technical skills, while the other four are served espresso, cappuccino and a specialty drink created by the barista.

Aczon and Licata are the first baristas from Hawaii to participate in the competition. If either wins the regionals, he will compete in a national competition in Anaheim, Calif., in April.

 

Learn about Mediterranean wines

Master sommelier Chuck Furuya offers an evening of wines from the Mediterranean basin at 6 p.m. next Wednesday at Vino in Restaurant Row.

The tasting will include the 2007 Numanthia “;Termes”; from Spain, 2004 Tommaso Bussola Amarone della Valpolicella from Italy, and from France, the 2006 Maxime Magnon “;La Demarrante,”; 2008 Gramenon “;La Sagesse”; and 2006 Dupere Barrera “;Tres Longue Maceration.”;

Imu fundraiser at Kailua school

Kailua Elementary School is holding a fundraising imu for the fourth grade's Big Island trip. Food goes into the underground oven on March 12, emerging the next morning steamed full of luau flavor.

Cost is $15 per large aluminum tray. Food — such as whole turkeys or pork butt, sweet potatoes, taro or luau leaves — must be thawed, seasoned and in foil.

Culinary event funds scholarships

Taste hundreds of wines from around the world along with dishes from the Kahala Hotel & Resort's various restaurants at the 10th Annual Executive Vineyards, a benefit for the University of Hawaii-Manoa Shidler College of Business.

The March 11 event also will feature a silent auction offering dining certificates, travel, art and more.

Proceeds will go toward an endowed scholarship fund and will be matched by the Shidler matching gifts program. Admission is $75 until Friday; $85 afterward. Premium tickets, which include a private wine seminar and sampling of exclusive wine-and-food pairings, are $95 and $105, respectively.
