Calling all rascals

Gerard AhQuin went to Rascal's Family Fun Center at Dole Cannery to check out the Princess room for his 3-year-old daughter's birthday party, “;but I fell in love with everything else,”; he said.

That everything else adds up to more than child's play. Rascal's opened in late December and houses plenty of fun and games for all ages, with a laser tag arena, a miniature bowling alley, a black-light 3-D miniature golf course, princess and pirate party rooms, an arcade and a play area for youngsters.

“;We wanted to have something for everyone,”; said owner Glen Peterson, who designed the facility with his wife and co-owner, Diane Gibbs Peterson. “;My kids love it,”; he said, noting that his 8-year-old son, Peyton, “;always wants to come and work”; at the family establishment.

AhQuin agreed. “;There's something for adults, not just the kids,”; he said. “;This is the only place on the island like this. It's for the big kid in all of us.”;

Drake Salsedo thoroughly enjoyed his first time playing laser tag.

“;I thought it was amazing. There was a lot of people, and I liked the lighting,”; he said. “;At one point, smoke comes down and it's really cool,”; he said.

An added bonus: “;Many kids sit at home and play video games. The laser tag is good exercise, a good cardio workout,”; Salsedo added.

COSTS

        » Laser tag: $9.95; $8.50 children and military

        » Golf: $7.99; $6.99 children and military

        » Bowling: $3.50 per game

        » Admission to Tot Town: $2.50 per two-hour period

The laser tag arena is themed after an ancient jungle of South America. Montezuma's head is affixed to the wall and overlooks the area, sending out laser beams that can knock out players' vests, so beware.

Latasha DaSilva enjoyed the minigolf course, noting that it took a while to get through because her family stopped along the way to admire the 3-D artwork and take pictures.

The pirate-themed golf course takes players on a journey where they begin as hostages on a pirate ship. The ship goes down and enters an underwater world. And finally, players emerge on the beach where they find pirate treasure, Peterson explained.

“;This is the best thing since Discovery Zone,”; DaSilva said. “;I also liked the back area, which was quiet for the baby.”;

The “;back area”; is Tot Town and has a Candyland-style theme with a few crooked playhouses, a small slide, a tabletop train set and some Legos to keep the younger kids entertained.

Two 12-year-olds, Nicholas Muramoto and Kimo Brown, said bowling was their favorite activity. They said the laser tag was “;OK,”; but it didn't have the “;stealth environment”; they sought.

“;I didn't like the giant head shooting lasers, because it was an instant KO (knockout when all of the lights are extinguished on the vest for a specific time period), but I liked the holes in the wall and ramps,”; said Nicholas.

“;Overall, I thought it was fun,”; Kimo said. “;The bowling was awesome. I liked that best.”;

Amber Murumoto plans on bringing her son, Nicholas, back. “;In some places the (arcade) machines are crammed in. I like that it's spacious and there are places to sit down,”; she said. “;It's a creative place ... and clean.”;

Peterson hopes to expand sometime later this year, branching out to Kaneohe and possibly Pearl City and Kapolei. He enjoys watching families spend quality time at the establishment.

“;It's rewarding to see parents and kids smiling, having a good time together. It's a clean, wholesome, fun environment,”; Peterson added. “;We're hoping people turn off the television and drive down to Rascal's.”;
