Man in critical condition after Kalihi mo-ped crash

A man believed to be in his 20s was in critical condition early yesterday morning after a mo-ped crash in Kalihi.

Paramedics were called to 2660 Kalihi St. at about 11 p.m. and stabilized the man, who appeared to be the mo-ped driver, said Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman.

Cheplic said the man was taken to a hospital in serious condition, but his condition later worsened to critical.

Drinking and argument lead to stabbing in Waianae

A 36-year-old man was in serious condition after a stabbing yesterday morning in Waianae.

Police said the man was stabbed during an argument that began while he was drinking with another person shortly before 3 a.m.

Paramedics responded to Puuhulu Road and took the man to the hospital with what appeared to be at least one stab wound, said Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman.

Police said officers recovered a knife, but the victim was reluctant to say who stabbed him.

Man in brawl is arrested after hitting police officer

Police arrested a 26-year-old man outside a Waikiki sports bar early yesterday after he allegedly punched a police officer.

The man was held on a possible first-degree assault charge for the 3:20 a.m. incident.

Police said that several officers were sent to a fight involving several men outside the Big Kahuna Bar on Kuhio Avenue. A 28-year-old policeman who was trying to subdue one of the brawlers was stuck by the suspect. The officer was not seriously injured.

Japanese crew member still missing at sea

The Coast Guard plans to search again today for a Japanese crew member reported overboard from a cruise ship northwest of Honolulu.

The man, 24, failed to show up for his post aboard the ship Pacific Venus at 2 p.m. Saturday as the ship was underway to Japan.

The captain of the Pacific Venus called the Coast Guard in Honolulu at 5 p.m. Saturday to report the missing crew member and to say the ship had turned around to look for him, a Coast Guard news release said.

The 550-foot ship was about 300 miles southwest of Midway Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and was returning to Yokohama, Japan, after a stop in Honolulu. The ship spent several hours Saturday afternoon looking for the crewman in a position where he was last known to have been aboard the ship.

A Coast Guard C-130 Hercules long-range search aircraft was airborne from Barbers Point at 5 a.m. yesterday and searched the crew member's last known position for three hours before returning to base.

A second aircrew aboard a second C-130 was airborne at 11 a.m. and searched for five hours before landing for the night at Midway, a former Navy base and now a U.S. Fish and Wildlife national wildlife refuge.

A good Samaritan vessel, the Japanese training sailing vessel Nippon Maru, answered a call to help and also was on scene searching.
