Moanalua earns a break after beating Mililani in OIA playoffs
POSTED: Sunday, February 21, 2010
Moanalua knows all about the driver's seat.
With a high-speed fast-break offense, Na Menehune overwhelmed Mililani 84-64 last night in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference playoffs at McKinley Student Council Gym.
Fourth-ranked Moanalua (22-5 overall) remained unbeaten in the double-elimination format, sending No. 5 Mililani (18-6) to the one-loss bracket. Moanalua will have a break until Thursday while the tourney's losers battle.
Reece Racoma scored all 19 of his points in the first half on 7-for-8 shooting to spark Moanalua, which led 49-39 at the break.
“;We had to wait one week to play them,”; Racoma said. “;We came prepared 110 percent. We came out firing and ready to play.”;
Marcus Monroe had 16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to anchor the paint. Moanalua had a 40-28 edge on the glass.
Kevin Amaral added 17 points off the bench on 8-for-14 shooting. Guards Marcus Keene (10 points) and Josiah Kauhola (six points, five assists) had the keys to the engine, revving Moanalua's fast break even after Mililani baskets.
“;That's how we want to play,”; Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said. “;Offensively, there's a lot of transition opportunities and layups. They did the same thing to us. We don't give up 39 points in the first half, ever, but I don't care as long as we take care of the ball. We play well in that kind of chaos.”;
While Racoma was hot from beyond the arc (5-for-5) before halftime, Mililani's Reginald Griffin pumped in 16 first-half points.
By the second half, Mililani pulled back and quit pressing fullcourt. Moanalua patiently worked through and over a 1-2-2 zone and expanded the lead to 62-46 on Monroe's 3-pointer from the top.
“;Coach told us they'd slow it down. They didn't want to run with us,”; Racoma said.
Mililani's 8-0 run, including five points by Reginald Griffin, made it 62-54 late in the third, but the Trojans got no closer.
Amaral hit three baseline jumpers in the fourth quarter, pushing Moanalua's lead to 75-58.
Wesley Armbrust added nine points for Na Menehune.
Moanalua shot 47 percent from the field (32-for-68) and committed only 12 turnovers despite the breakneck pace of the first half.
Griffin finished with 23 points (8-for-19), while Trent McKinney added 14 points and nine boards. Hassan Richardson added eight points, seven caroms and three blocks.
Mililani shot 44 percent (22-for-50), but had 21 giveaways against Moanalua's fullcourt pressure and tight man-to-man defense.
