UH earns split in softball

The Hawaii softball team bounced back in a big way to earn a split at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine fell 11-2 to No. 10 Georgia Tech in the first game, as the Yellow Jackets pounded out three straight home runs off Stephanie Ricketts (2-3)

Hawaii (6-3) rebounded to trounce San Diego 16-3 in its second game.

Amanda Tauali'i, Jessica Iwata and Melissa Gomez smacked homers in support of Kaia Parnaby (4-0), who struck out nine en route to a complete-game victory.

 

Donovan, Shea at QB Club

University of Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan and Patrick K. Shea, a vice president with the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Maple Garden Restaurant, and the program is slated to start at noon.

 

Kim leads Hilo Invite

David Kim fired a 5-under 66 to grab the lead of the 13th Hilo Invitational Golf Tournament at Hilo Municipal Golf Course yesterday.

Kim holds a one-shot lead over Jacob Low (67) heading into today's final round.

Amateur Chris Igawa (68) is alone in third, while defending champion Nick Mason (70) sits four strokes back.

Dixie State downs HPU

Hawaii Pacific fell to Dixie State 97-86 in men's basketball at Blaisdell Arena yesterday.

Tom Whitehead scored a game-high 29 points for the Red Storm, who improved to 16-5 (10-2 PacWest).

Ray Murdock scored 24 points for the Sea Warriors, who fell to 19-4 and into a three-way tie atop the conference with Dixie State and Brigham Young-Hawaii.

» Courtney Buster scored 25 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead HPU to a 91-78 win over Dixie State in women's basketball at Blaisdell Arena yesterday.

The Lady Sea Warriors improved to 11-1 in conference, while Dixie State fell to 9-3.

 

Hawaii Pacific splits with Pacific

Hawaii Pacific earned a split with Pacific University in a men's baseball doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park yesterday.

The Sea Warriors pounded the Boxers 11-3 in the first game, lighting up three Pacific pitchers for 16 hits, including a two-run home run by designated hitter Bas Nooij.

In the second game, Pacific pounded HPU 14-0 as freshman Rob Dittrick (Mid-Pacific, '09) scattered four hits over six innings to earn the win.

HPU is now 7-2 for the season.

 

Chaminade takes 2 from BYUH

Chaminade swept Brigham Young-Hawaii with a pair of 5-4 scores in a PacWest softball doubleheader at Central Oahu Regional Park yesterday.

The Silverswords rallied from two runs down early and Kelly Korras earned the complete-game win in the first game.

Keli-Grace Saniatan went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the second game for Chaminade, which improved to 2-4 for the season. BYUH fell to 0-8.

 

HPU sweeps Simon Fraser

Hawaii Pacific swept Simon Fraser University in a softball doubleheader in Kaneohe yesterday.

Sherise Musquiz (4-0) tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout in the first game. The Sea Warriors (8-0) edged the Clan 2-1 in the second game.

 

HPU beats Chaminade

Hawaii Pacific downed Chaminade 6-3 in women's tennis at the Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex yesterday.

The Lady Sea Warriors led 2-1 after doubles play behind Ingrid Cseh and Zora Vlckova, who defeated Chaminade's Yuka Kondo and Tiffany DeVincent at No. 1 doubles.

Vlckova blanked Kondo in singles, and Hawaii Pacific also picked up wins at three, four and five singles.

Hawaii Pacific improved to 3-0; Chaminade fell to 1-2.

 

Hawaii-Hilo falls to Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon University outran Hawaii-Hilo 69-58 in PacWest women's basketball in Hilo yesterday.

Samantha Murphy scored 16 points to lead the Antelopes (16-7, 10-2 PacWest).

Hina Kimitete led the Vulcans, who fell to 7-16 overall (4-8 PacWest).
