Woman struck by bus was loyal churchgoer
POSTED: Sunday, February 21, 2010
There will be an empty seat at today's Logos Korean Church service in Kaimuki.
Michelle Jeoung Ah Kim, who never missed a Sunday and prayed at the church several times a week, died Friday after she was hit by a school bus on University Avenue.
Senior Pastor Il Hyeon Nam said Kim liked to walk to the chapel in the morning to pray and may have been headed to church.
“;She liked to walk and she liked exercise,”; he said. “;She don't want to drive; she just want to walk.”;
Kim was crossing the street about 6:35 a.m. just outside her condo at 555 University Avenue when the bus, carrying 40 schoolchildren, ran over her and dragged her 20 feet.
Kim was co-owner of Blue Ribbon Bar & Grill on South King Street in McCully for about three years, friends said. Her business partner was too distraught yesterday to talk about the accident.
Kim did not have family in Hawaii, but friends said she had been a member of Logos Korean Church on 12th Avenue for about 15 years.
“;She's a strong church person,”; Nam said. “;We do miss her.”;
At the church, Kim served as worship team leader, choir member and senior deacon. She volunteered on the committee that built the congregation's new home. She also gave generously, buying new choir gowns and donating to build the new church.
He said friends gathered Friday night at the church to grieve.
“;All of our church members were crying and weeping,”; he said.
Kim's family is expected to arrive from South Korea this week.
The church is holding a memorial service for Kim at 5:30 p.m. today.
