The National Public Radio show “;From the Top”; highlights performances by young and talented musicians from concerts recorded on the Big Island starting next Saturday.

The first of two shows, recorded at the Kahilu Theatre in Kamuela, will be broadcast on Hawaii Public Radio at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In January 2009, NPR's acclaimed program, hosted by Christopher Riley, went to the Big Island for a week that included four local in-school education residencies and two live performance tapings in Waimea and Keaau.

The Kahilu Theater performance features one local outstanding young musician, pianist Tiffany Cheung, who performs Liszt's “;Transcendental Etude No. 12.”; Tiffany, a student of Thomas Yee, is a junior at 'Iolani School. The program also contains a special tribute to Gary Washburn and the Honokaa High School Jazz Band, as well as performances by four other talented youngsters from various locations on the mainland.

The second of the Big Island shows — this one taped at the William Charles Lunalilo Center on the campus of the Kamehameha Schools Hawaii in Keaau — will be broadcast at 10 a.m. March 20.

Hawaii musicians who will be featured include 16-year-old slack key guitarist Sean Robbins, from Pahoa High School; Aris Doike, a 17-year-old cellist from Moanalua High School; and pianist Evan Lin, a 14-year-old freshman at Punahou School.

This was the fourth time that HPR has brought Riley and the “;From the Top”; crew to Hawaii. The first three visits included performances taped on Oahu and Maui.
