UH takes 2 in Vegas

The Hawaii softball team rallied after yielding five runs early to defeat Utah 11-8 in the opener of the Louisville-Slugger Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas.

Center fielder Kelly Majam and first baseman Amanda Tauali'i were 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Rainbow Wahine. Stephanie Ricketts picked up her fourth complete-game win of the season, allowing 10 hits and striking out nine.

Hawaii also won its second game of the tournament, blanking host Nevada-Las Vegas 11-0 in five innings. The Rainbow Wahine hit five homers as freshman Kaia Parnaby picked up her second complete-game shutout of the season.

UNLV wins Burns golf

Nevada-Las Vegas posted a 28-under 836 at the Leilehua Golf Course to capture the 54-hole John A. Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament yesterday in a one-hole playoff with Texas A&M.

Led by freshman Cory Oride's tie for 29th at 1-over 217, Hawaii finished 13th with a three-day score of 28-over 892. Hawaii Pacific finished 14th (41-over 905) and Brigham Young-Hawaii 15th (58-over 922). Ale Radice-Fossati shot a 5-over 222 to lead Hawaii Pacific with a tie for 54th. Inoka Kahawaii recorded a 7-over 224 as the low man for BYU-Hawaii, good enough for a tie for 60th.

Texas A&M's Andrea Pavin captured the individual title with a 12-under 204.

BYUH swept by SFU

The Brigham Young-Hawaii Seasider's softball team dropped both games of a nonconference doubleheader against Simon Fraser, 13-1 in the opener and 9-0 in the finale.

In the first game, SFU had 12 hits and took advantage of 10 Seasiders errors.

Grand Canyon tops UHH

Amber Waracka pitched a five-hitter for UH-Hilo, but it was not enough as the Grand Canyon Antelopes defeated the Vulcans 2-0 in Phoenix. UH-Hilo fell to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the PacWest. Amy Searcy pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for Grand Canyon (9-1, 2-1).
