A homeless man arrested for allegedly stabbing two other men in downtown Honolulu this month recently got out of jail after serving a 30-day sentence for abuse of a family or household member.

An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging Marsian Aliwis, 36, with two counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. He has been in custody since his arrest for the Feb. 9 attack.

Circuit Judge Richard Perkins increased Aliwis' bail yesterday to $250,000 from $75,000.

Police said Aliwis attacked the victims, ages 19 and 21, with a knife after they heard Aliwis and his girlfriend arguing and tried to mediate.

The victims suffered multiple stab wounds and could have died from their injuries, said Vickie Kapp, deputy prosecutor.

Aliwis pleaded guilty to two counts of abuse Nov. 10 and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. But because he had already been in custody for more than 30 days, the judge ordered him immediately released.
