Unseeded 'Iolani into semifinal

POSTED: Thursday, February 18, 2010

Freshman Alex Masaquel saved her best performance of the year for the state tourney.

The 5-foot-10 post scored six of her game-high 20 points in overtime, including a go-ahead follow shot in traffic with 59 seconds left, as the Raiders advanced to the Division I semifinals of the Hawaiian Airlines /HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships.

“;I was surprised,”; Masaquel said of her success in the paint. “;We played them in preseason and lost. They're tough.”;

It was Farrington that eliminated 'Iolani 68-51 in last year's quarterfinal round. This time, 'Iolani advanced and will face top-seeded Konawaena tonight at Blaisdell Arena.

Their freshman post, Masaquel, was clutch. Her putback gave unseeded 'Iolani a 59-58 lead. On the next trip down the floor, Farrington's Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo and Kirsten Liana missed point-blank layups from the right side, and 'Iolani came down with the rebound.

Tatupu-Leopoldo committed her fifth foul, sending Lori Yamashita to the foul line. Yamashita hit both shots to give the Raiders a 61-58 lead with 23 seconds left.

Farrington's next possession, though, ended with a turnover when Liana dribbled upcourt and stepped on the baseline.

Lahela Usui then made two free throws with 9 seconds to go for the final margin of victory.

It was an inspiring win by the Raiders, who had two players (Kylie Maeda and Usui) playing despite knee injuries. Maeda suffered an ACL tear early in preseason, but returned for the state tourney. Usui suffered a partial MCL tear late in the regular season.

“;It's one of those things when time would tell,”; 'Iolani coach Eddie Maruyama said. “;You hope for them so they can come back.”;

The third-seeded Buffanblu held on for a thrilling five-point victory against the Warriors, the BIIF runners-up.

Punahou was led by Janet Li's 10 points as the Buffanblu advanced into semifinal action, where they will take on the undefeated Lahainaluna Lunas.

Waiakea had a chance to cut the lead to a single point with under a minute to go, but a layup in the paint wouldn't fall and Punahou hit their free throws to preserve the victory.
