Konawaena steals the show

POSTED: Thursday, February 18, 2010

It was a white-and-green blur for 32 minutes last night.

By the time the Konawaena Wildcats were done, they had 25 steals in a 59-31 win over Kapolei and looked every bit the part of a defending champion and No. 1 seed of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. Lia Galdeira had 17 points, 13 steals and four assists, while point guard Dawnyelle Awa tallied 17 points, seven steals and three assists for the Wildcats, who will meet 'Iolani in today's 5 p.m. semifinal at Blaisdell Arena.

Last night, a crowd of about 500 at McKinley Student Council Gym saw Konawaena use traps out of a halfcourt man-to-man defense to force Kapolei into 32 turnovers.

“;The girls read a lot. We tell them to look for opportunities to trap,”; coach Bobbie Awa said. “;We put more on the girls to think on the court.”;

Galdeira and the coach's daughter, Dawnyelle, led the defensive attack, swarming to any spot on the floor when ballhandlers turned away. Awa, who grew since last year and is 5-9 now, is more assertive now. She shot 7-for-11 from the field, hitting a pair of treys.

“;It's important that we come out strong. As a captain, I gotta be more verbal,”; Awa said.

Galdeira had seven of her 13 steals in the first quarter, when the Wildcats raced to a 16-3 lead. She and Awa ended the quarter with back-to-back steals for layups.

“;We communicate good out there,”; Galdeira said, ice taped around her left shoulder. “;We're taking one game at a time, working our butts off. We're playing our game, not our opponents' game.”;

By the end of the first half, Konawaena had a commanding 38-12 lead. Midway through the third quarter, coach Bobbie Awa emptied her bench, inserting newly-promoted players from the junior varsity team.

Konawaena, 24-1 overall, notched its 44th consecutive win over two seasons against Hawaii teams. Its last loss to a local squad was in the 2008 'Iolani Classic against Punahou.

Thea Hanato-Smith added nine points and forward Anuhea Wall tallied eight points for Konawaena.

Center Leilani Tuani-Fifita and guard Kawehi Hagi led Kapolei (16-9) with seven points each. Hagi added team-highs of seven boards and three steals, while Tuani-Fifita had six steals.

“;I thought they'd press us fullcourt,”; Kapolei coach Jesse Baugh said. “;They pressed us halfcourt, but our girls got rattled and panicked.”;

When Kapolei ran its press break and got the ball down low to Tuani-Fifita, there wasn't a lot the smaller Wildcats could do. Turnovers, though, hurt the 'Canes.

“;We had nothing to lose. We made it this far. We just said, 'Don't quit. Try to be smart,'”; Baugh said.
