Wahine lose in WAC basketball

Hawaii junior guard Keisha Kanekoa scored a season-high 22 points, but it was not enough as host San Jose State downed the Rainbow Wahine 68-61 in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game last night at the Events Center.

Sophomore guard Briauna Linton added 10 points, nine in the second half, and junior forward Breanna Arbuckle also had 10 points for Hawaii (9-17, 3-10 WAC). The Spartans (6-19, 2-10) had four players in double figures, led by Chastity Stevens' 16.

Bess to appear at HSQ clinic

Miami Dolphins receiver and former UH slotback Davone Bess will be a guest instructor at Saturday's Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinic at Klum Gym.

Bess, the UH leader in career receptions, caught 76 passes for 758 yards in his second season with the Dolphins.

The clinics run from 8:30 to 10 a.m., Saturday and Sunday. Registration starts at 8. The fee is $10.

SMU, Cal share Burns golf lead

Cal's Stephen Hal shot a 7-under 65 yesterday as the Golden Bears shared first place with SMU after the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate men's golf tournament at the Leilehua Golf Course.

Cal and SMU led the 15-team field at 278. Host Hawaii was tied for 10th with UTEP at 293. Hawaii Pacific was 14th (300) and Brigham Young-Hawaii 15th (308).

Leading the Warriors was freshman Cory Oride, who tied his career-low round with a 70. Play continues through tomorrow's final round.

Singles titles to Johnson, Sanders

Top-seeded Eric Johnson won the boys title and second-seeded Brittney Sanders the girls as the USTA Boys and Girls 18s National Tennis Open concluded at the Central Oahu Regional Park courts.

Johnson , who turned 17 yesterday, defeated Jamin Ball 6-3, 6-4 in the final. Sanders rallied past eighth-seeded Jacqueline Crawford 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6).
