Westmoreland falls in USTA 18s
Island Pacific Academy senior Matthew Westmoreland started strong but couldn't finish off top-seeded Eric Johnson in the 2010 USTA Boys & Girls 18s National Open quarterfinals yesterday at Central Oahu Regional park.
Westmoreland, a two-time Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, lost 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).
Westmoreland was the highest local seed.

UHH, HPU split baseball twin bill
Host Hawaii-Hilo defeated Hawaii Pacific 7-2 in the opener of a doubleheader yesterday, but the Sea Warriors responded with a 9-6 win in the second contest.
Catcher John Hoffman went 2-for-2 with three RBIs to lead the Vulcans in the Game 1 victory.
John Holley pitched six strong innings with six strikeouts for the win and dealt HPU its first loss of the season.
But behind a six-run third inning, the Sea Warriors (5-1) salvaged a split with the Vulcans (4-8) in Game 2.
Tyler Davis (3-for-5), Sean Winston (2-for-5) and Wade Tamaru (3-for-4) each drove in two runs for visiting HPU.
HPU tennis tops Azusa Pacific
The No. 5 Hawaii Pacific men's tennis team defeated Azusa Pacific 5-4 yesterday in Azusa, Calif.
HPU (4-1) got singles victories from Daniel Luedi and Anton Samuilau at the No. 4 and 6 courts, respectively, to secure the team win.
Azusa, the No. 5 team in the NAIA, fell to 1-1.
» The Hawaii-Hilo men's tennis team defeated host Grand Canyon 7-2 yesterday to improve to 2-1 in the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix.
The Vulcans (2-3) beat Montana State-Billings 9-0 and lost to Midwestern State University 7-2 earlier in the tournament.
