Girl, 1, nearly drowns in Kahaluu swimming pool
A 1-year-old girl was in critical condition yesterday after nearly drowning in a swimming pool on Mapumapu Road in Kahaluu.
Firefighters responded to a call about the possible drowning shortly before 4 p.m., said fire Capt. Robert Main.
When paramedics arrived, the girl had been pulled from the pool, and a man was performing CPR, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Department.
Paramedics took the girl in critical condition to the hospital, Cheplic said.
Kayaking woman, daughter rescued off Mahukona park
Big Island firefighters rescued a 57-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter yesterday after they were caught in strong winds while kayaking off Mahukona State Park.
The pair were in a 10-foot inflatable kayak at about 3 p.m. when they found they could not paddle back to shore, firefighters said.
A helicopter picked up the woman and the girl about a half-mile from shore and brought both to Lapakahi. No one was injured.
Housemates' argument ends in flashlight assault
Police arrested a 58-year-old man in the assault with a flashlight of a 69-year-old man in Whitmore Village.
The two men, who are housemates at a Kanikani Place residence, were arguing at about 7:45 p.m. Friday when the younger man struck the older man on the head several times with a flashlight, police said.
The older man was taken to the hospital with substantial injuries.
The suspect turned himself in on Saturday and was booked on suspicion of second-degree assault.
Big Island man, 18 sought in robbery in Kailua-Kona
Police are looking for an 18-year-old man wanted for a Feb. 2 robbery in Kailua-Kona.
Curtis Kalai Wilson-Silva is described as part-Hawaiian, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 165 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen in the Kailua-Kona town area.

Baby's broken leg prompts investigation of assault
Police are investigating the case of a 5-month-old girl who was brought to Kapiolani Medical Center with a broken leg on Tuesday evening.
Police said the girl's mother brought in the infant because of swelling to her left leg. The baby was diagnosed with a fractured left femur, police said.
Police said they do not know how the child was injured. They are investigating the case as a second-degree assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.
Kaneohe man, 32, charged in sex assault of 2 children
Authorities charged a 32-year-old Kaneohe man for allegedly sexually assaulting two children, ages 4 and 2.
Harold Bray was charged last week with five counts of third-degree sexual assault, which is usually associated with inappropriate touching.
Police said a family member reported seeing Bray sexually assaulting the 4-year-old girl and the 2-year-old boy. The sexual assaults allegedly occurred between Jan 1, 2009, and Aug. 16.
Bray's bail was set at $200,000.
