Konawaena still team to beat

Defending state champions Konawaena (Division I) and Molokai (Division II) were given the top seeds in this week's Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls State Basketball Championships.

The Wildcats went undefeated in the BIIF this season at 10-0. Other top seeds are No. 2 Lahainaluna (MIL), No. 3 Punahou (ILH) and No. 4 Farrington (OIA).

Tuesday through Thursday games are at McKinley and Radford.

Since 2003, either Punahou or Konawaena has won the title.

In Division II, No. 2 Kaimuki (OIA), No. 3 Sacred Hearts (ILH) and No. 4 Kamehameha-Hawaii (BIIF) join Molokai as the seeded teams.

Games Tuesday through Thursday are at Kalani and Farrington.

Championship day (Friday) in both Division I and Division II is at Blaisdell Arena.

 

Saddleton sets personal best

Hawaii high jumper Sarah Saddleton posted an NCAA provisional mark yesterday, clearing 5-10 to win the event at the University of Washington's Indoor Open in Seattle.

Saddleton, a sophomore from New Zealand, was one of five Rainbows to set personal bests. Senior Mariana Monsai won her section in the middle distance race with a time of 3:05.51 and senior Jessica Forrester placed fourth in 3:08.24, both career bests.

Sophomore TeRina Keenan set a personal best in the shot put, with a mark of 12.81 meters. Sophomore Mallory Ramsey set a personal record in the pole vault, clearing 11-3/4.

 

HPU stays unbeaten

Alex Agortsas hit a two-run single and Kenny Turner scored twice to lead the Hawaii Pacific baseball team to a 4-2 victory over Hawaii-Hilo yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader at Wong Stadium.

The Sea Warriors swept with a 6-5 win in the nightcap to remain undefeated (4-0, 4-0) for the season. The Vulcans (3-7, 0-4) are still winless in PacWest play.

Toby Inouye scattered three hits over seven innings, allowing two runs and one walk while striking out six to earn the win for HPU in the first game.

 

Vulcans pull away late

Kanani Numata hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to help the Hawaii-Hilo softball team defeat Chadron State 5-2 yesterday at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.

Amber Waracka allowed two runs over seven innings on seven hits while striking out five to earn the win.

 

HPU loses at the buzzer

Samantha Murphy's layup as time expired capped a 6-0 run over the final minute to give Grand Canyon a 56-55 victory over Hawaii Pacific yesterday in a women's basketball game at Mid-Pacific Institute Gym.
