Bill Clinton shows the importance of heeding signs

Former President Bill Clinton is becoming quite the poster boy for heart care.

After experiencing chest pains and discomfort last week, Clinton underwent a procedure to clear a blocked artery that involved the insertion of two stents into a coronary artery. His cardiologist said Clinton would have suffered a heart attack if he had waited a few more days.

The incident recalled 2004, when Clinton underwent quadruple coronary artery bypass surgery after complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath.

In both cases, early detection and corrective procedures forestalled a potentially lethal heart attack. That's a valuable life lesson for all who have a history of heart trouble—and even for those who don't.

Libraries a friend, indeed, when we're all in need

Hawaii residents are turning to their public libraries for free entertainment during tough times. More than 7.2 million books were borrowed last year, a 10-year high.

These vital community institutions also lend movies and music, offer free Internet service and provide numerous engaging special programs for kids and adults alike.

State budget cuts have hit the libraries hard, curtailing hours of operation, and the Friends of the Library is still collecting monetary donations to help keep them open.
