Rainbow Wahine fall to Vandals

Hawaii (9-15, 3-8) dropped the opener of a three-game road trip, 74-59, to Idaho at the Cowan Spectrum in Moscow, Idaho.

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team kept it close early, trailing the Vandals by only four at halftime before fading after intermission. Leilani Galdones led the way for Hawaii with 19 points. Keisha Kanekoa added 10.

Track and field breaks record

University of Hawaii sophomore Madara Apine broke the school's indoor triple jump record yesterday at the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington.

Apine's mark of 12.23 meters broke a 2008 record set by Mallory Gilbert and was one of eight personal bests and two seasonal bests for the Rainbow Wahine.

Jamilee Jimenez bested her personal record in the long jump, while teammate TeRina Keena trumped her own shot put mark. Karen Guravska and Mallory Ramsey cleared new heights in the pole vault and four other Wahine surpassed their personal bests.

Wahine golf team tees up at Stanford

The University of Hawaii women's golf team trails by 17 strokes following the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational played yesterday at the Stanford Golf Course. The Rainbow Wahine are in seventh place with a first-round score of 313.

Senior Corie Hou is tied for third and leads the team with a 73.

Kim, Ellis share Pearl Open lead

Hyung Sung Kim (67) and John Ellis (65) are tied at 135 after the opening two rounds of the Hawaii Pearl Open held yesterday at the Pearl Country Club.

Leilehua alumnus Nick Mason finished at 8 under par and is tied for second with Dong Sub Maeng and Sung Yeol Kwon at 136. Defending champion Jesse Mueller is tied for eighth at 139.

The 78 golfers who made the cut start the third round at 7:30 a.m. today.

Seasiders trump Tritons in tennis

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's tennis team slipped past 35th-ranked UC San Diego with a 5-4 score yesterday in Glendale, Ariz. The Seasiders competed with six players for the first time this season.

BYUH split six singles matches but won two out of three doubles matches to claim the victory.

HPU volleyball sweeps Swords

The Hawaii Pacific softball team defeated Chaminade at the Central Oahu Regional Park 8-1 and 3-2 in a nonconference doubleheader between PacWest schools.

Sherise Musquiz improved to 3-0 for the season with a six-inning, no-run performance in HPU's 8-1 win, while Ashley Valine pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs with one strikeout in the Sea Warriors' 3-2 victory.

HPU improved to 6-0 with the doubleheader sweep and Chaminade dropped to 1-3.

Sea Warriors get by Vulcans

Hawaii Pacific came up big late as they defeated Hawaii-Hilo with two runs in the top of the ninth inning to win 4-2 at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Bas Nooij and Kenny Turner came up with RBI singles in the top of the ninth inning to help HPU improve to 2-0 for the season.

T.J. Pilla was 1-for-4 for Hawaii-Hilo, driving in both of the Vulcans' runs as they fell to 3-5 on the season.

Seasiders get swept by Lions

The Brigham Young softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Vanguard University, 4-3 and 10-2 in Laie.

BYU-Hawaii fell behind early in both games and mounted early comebacks but were rebuffed in their attempts with late-inning flurries by the Lions.

With the loss, the Seasiders fall to 0-4.
