Christian, Jewish and Muslim speakers will give their perspectives on the conflict in Israel and the Palestinian territories at a conference this month in Honolulu.

The Rev. Naim Ateek, an Anglican priest who is Palestinian and a citizen of Israel, will be the keynote speaker at the Feb. 26-27 event at St. Andrew's Cathedral. Ateek is founder and director of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem.

“;What Does Justice Require of US: Peace with Justice in the Holy Land”; is the theme of the conference. It is sponsored by the Hawaii chapter of Friends of Sabeel, a North American organization supporting the Jerusalem center's nonviolent pattern. The group supports the rights of Palestinian people.

Other speakers include:

» Jeff Halper, Israeli anthropology professor and founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions.

» Anna Baltzer, author of “;Witness to Palestine: Journal of a Jewish American Woman in the Occupied Territories.”;

» Mohammed Alatar, a filmmaker and human rights activist from the West Bank.

» Laila Al-Marayati, a Palestinian-American physician who was appointed to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom by former President Bill Clinton.

» Cindy and Craig Corrie, parents of Rachel Corrie, an American activist killed by an Israeli soldier in 2003 while trying to stop demolition of homes in Gaza.

» Mark Braverman, a psychologist and author of “;Fatal Embrace: Christians, Jews and the Search for Peace in the Holy Land.”;

Other workshop sessions are planned, including a session on a Buddhist perspective and the role of socially engaged Buddhists in the issue.

The cost of the conference is $40 per day and $20 for students. It includes continental breakfast and lunch. Friday is the deadline for reservations for a $15 buffet dinner Feb. 26. For information and reservations, call 230-3218 or see the Web page http://www.fosna.org and click on “;Honolulu conference.”;

Margaret Brown of Friends of Sabeel said although the Palestinian territories are “;literally a half world away,”; events there affect Hawaii residents. “;Many political analysts cite the ongoing violence and injustice there as the root cause of so much of the rage in the Muslim world. In Hawaii we are training soldiers to go to Afghanistan. It has a direct effect on Hawaii.”;

The title of the conference is taken from a phrase from the Old Testament book of Micah: “;Oh mortal, what is good and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”;
