Honokaa, Mid-Pacific pitch shutouts to reach championship match

Kapaa is out and Honokaa is in.
Kapaa, the defending Division II state champion, had no answers for a Honokaa squad that reached the final for the first time thanks to a 2-0 win yesterday in the JN Automotive/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
The third-seeded Dragons (12-2-3), guided by veteran coach Maurice Miranda, will meet top-seeded Mid-Pacific in the 5 p.m. match in the stadium.
A defense anchored by Josh Robinson and Sage Johnson led the way.
Offensive execution was key for Honokaa, which got two assists from sophomore Dylan Shiraki that resulted in headers. His first throw-in went to Johnson, one of only five seniors on the squad.
“;He's amazing at throw-ins,”; said Johnson, who was a standout quarterback for Honokaa. “;I went up and got it on the other side.”;
Jeremy Yagong added a goal later in the first half.
“;That's been our weapon all year. It floated over the defense and I just timed it right,”; the senior said.

The imposing, tall Spartans (7-1-6) couldn't quite keep up with the speedy Owls (11-2-1), who got a goal from Cody Sullivan in the first half and held on.
Mid-Pac, which won the title in 2008, was battered and bruised, but familiar with the territory.
“;They came out with a lot of heart and played real physical,”; MPI coach Jayson Abe said.
“;They were kind of like Saint Louis,”; midfielder Brendan Wesley-Smith added.
The Owls made use of their depth. Abe went 16 players deep with little dropoff in speed and skill.
Sullivan's goal came on a feed from Kennedy Spencer.
“;The ball got played to Kennedy and he slotted it across the field,”; Sullivan said.
Sullivan wasn't there when MPI beat Honokaa in a preseason match. He was on a school trip to New Zealand.
