Pearl Open jumbled at top

There is a three-way tie atop the leaderboard after the first round of the Hawaii Pearl Open.

Akinori Tani, Sung Yeol Kwon and Nicholas Mason each shot a 67 yesterday to take a one-shot lead into round two.

Kouki Furuta of Japan is the high amateur, shooting a 69 to land in a tie for seventh.

 

Wahine softball team splits a pair in Paradise

After a tough one-run loss Thursday night to McNeese State, the Rainbow Wahine softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 9-0 victory against Texas A&M Corpus-Christi last night in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.

In a game shortened by the mercy rule, the Rainbow Wahine had 11 hits (three by Katie Grimes). Making her collegiate debut for UH, Kaia Parnaby struck out 11 of the 18 batters she faced and allowed only two hits.

Hawaii dropped the nightcap to Stanford 2-0.

 

Vulcan softball team wins 2 in Las Vegas

The Hawaii-Hilo softball team opened its season with two victories at the Las Vegas Invitational yesterday.

In Game 1, Sarah Weisskopf hit a three-run homer as the Vulcans beat Fort Lewis College 7-3 in eight innings.

In the second game, Jessica Schatz's two-run homer powered a 5-3 win against Colorado School of Mines.

 

HPU men's tennis team falls to Fresno Pacific

Hawaii Pacific men's tennis team lost the first of a four-match road swing against top-ranked Fresno Pacific yesterday, 6-3.

The fifth-ranked Sea Warriors (2-1) fell behind 3-0 after the doubles matches and couldn't catch up.

The team is back on the court today against Claremont Mudd-Scripps.
