No. 4 Moanalua races past Leilehua
POSTED: Thursday, February 11, 2010
They want perfection so bad, sometimes Moanalua Na Menehune grumble a little about it.
Moanalua raced to an 18-point first-half lead and smothered Leilehua 66-39 last night in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference playoff action.
A crowd of about 500 watched at Moanalua's gym as Marcus Monroe amassed 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the fourth-ranked Menehune (20-5 overall), who host Campbell tomorrow night in the double-elimination tourney.
Keven Amaral added 15 points off the bench for Moanalua, which shot 52 percent (26-for-50) with crisp passing by Marcus Weems, Reece Racoma and Josiah Kauhola (three steals).
Moanalua was out of sync for a spell in the second quarter, when it was riddled with some poor passing and a bit of a blame game.
“;We were fighting with each other, pointing fingers,”; Monroe said. “;We had nobody to blame but ourselves. That's not how you pick each other up.”;
After opening with a 24-6 lead, Moanalua mistakes gave the hustling Mules an opening. Carlos Marshall scored on a coast-to-coast bucket and rained in a 3-pointer to spark an 11-0 run. Leilehua got within 24-17 on a free throw by center Cassius Camanse, but got no closer the rest of the night.
“;Leilehua upped their play and instead of matching it, we started fighting with each other,”; Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said. “;At the half, we said, 'We talk with each other, not confront each other.' “;
Back on the same page, Moanalua opened the second half with a fury, dominating the boards 12-3 in the third quarter and limiting the visitors to 4-for-11 shooting. Monroe hit mid-range jumpers and 3-point bombs, tallying 12 points in the third.
His final trey, off a feed from Weems with 1 second left in the quarter, pushed Moanalua to a commanding 51-29 lead.
Martin Hall led the Mules (10-5 OIA), who reached yesterday's round after a win over Kaiser on Tuesday, with seven points.
Leilehua tried everything from man defense to zone to a three-quarter fullcourt press, but it was 10-for-31 shooting at the free-throw line that sank the ship.
“;We needed to make free throws when they counted more,”; Mules coach Keith Spencer said.
At one point, Leilehua was 4-for-16 from the charity stripe. Eighteen turnovers didn't help either.
“;Their defensive pressure took us out of what we wanted to do. It's the inconsistency, not always executing, that hurts us,”; Spencer added.
The teams last met in early December at the James Alegre Invitational, a game won by Moanalua 48-40.
“;Their defense is a lot better than at Alegre,”; Spencer said. “;We were trying to get the game in the 40s.”;
Tacon was pleased with his team's growth, but the basics like filling the lanes made him smile.
“;We pushed the ball and filled the lanes,”; he said. “;Carl (Ko) did a great job for us.”;
Ko, filling in for Richard Villasenor, started and played big minutes before fouling out in the second half. He sustained a cut over his left eye on a collision that led to his last foul, but was in good spirits.
“;Everything feels better when we win,”; he said.
