Rainbow Wahine drop close match

Hawaii fell to the Aztecs of San Diego State, 4-3 yesterday at Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego.

The Rainbow Wahine lost the doubles point, with only Sophie Kobuch and Katarina Poljakova coming up with a victory for Hawaii as they defeated Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison 8-5. In singles play Kobuch defeated second-ranked Julia Wais 6-1, 7-6(5), while Poljakova defeated Roxanne Ellison 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Hawaii's only other singles win came as Alyssa Nafarrete defeated Olivia Colman 6-4, 6-0.

HPU dominates softball honors

HPU sophomore Maile Kim was named the preseason player of the year and Sea Warrior senior Sherise Musquiz the pitcher of the year on the PacWest preseason softball team announced yesterday.

Three other HPU players were named to the team: senior outfielder Ciera Senas, senior Laine Shikuma and junior Kozy Toriano, selected at catcher and utility.

In the preseason poll, Dixie State was picked to repeat as league champion, receiving five first-place votes. HPU, with three first-place votes, was second, followed by Grand Canyon, Hawaii-Hilo, Academy of Art, Chaminade, Notre Dame de Namur, BYU-Hawaii and Dominican.

Sea Warriors sweep softball

Sherise Musquiz tossed a one-hitter, striking out four, to lead Hawaii Pacific to an 8-0 victory over Vanguard in the first game of a nonconference softball doubleheader yesterday at Howard Okita Field.

The Sea Warriors (4-0) completed the sweep with a 3-0 win in the second game. Breanne Patton earned the victory, limiting the Lions to three hits.

HPU golfers defeat BYUH

Hawaii Pacific shot 298 as a team and defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii by 28 strokes at Waikele Country Club. HPU's Matt Tweddell and Matt Demoreas both shot a match-low 73.

Seasiders roll in tennis

The third-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women's tennis team shut out Dixie State 9-0 yesterday in Glendale, Ariz.

The Seasiders won all six singles matches in straight sets, including Yuan Jia's 6-0, 6-0 win over Alicia Holm at No. 1 singles. BYUH dropped just three games against the Red Storm in improving to 2-0.

BYUH, HPU in hoops poll

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball team stayed put at No. 7 while Hawaii Pacific was ranked ninth in yesterday's NCAA II West Regional poll.

The Seasiders, 12-5 for the season, are 11-4 in the West Region while the PacWest-leading Sea Warriors are 11-4 both overall and in the region.
