Moanalua did just about everything possible to stay alive in the playoffs.

Na Menehune just didn't make enough free throws, and Roosevelt is thankful for that. The Rough Riders got 16 points from Nicole Ramirez and a key go-ahead layup by Kelcie Namba for a 49-43 double-overtime win over Moanalua last night at Roosevelt's gym.

The seventh-ranked Rough Riders (17-4) advanced in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference double-elimination tourney and will play Farrington tomorrow at Mililani's gym in a televised battle. Roosevelt, which has one loss in the tourney (to Farrington), will need two victories over Farrington to claim the league title. The Governors can seal the OIA Red title with a win.

Tenth-ranked Moanalua (14-10) got 11 points from Jasmine Funtanilla, who also grabbed six rebounds and hit a 23-foot trey to end the first half to give her team a 20-18 lead. A.J. Verdida also scored 11 points.

The team shot 43 percent from the field (18-for-42) against Roosevelt's man and zone defenses. Roosevelt shot 33 percent (17-for-52).

Kiley Lau added eight points off the bench for Moanalua, whose fans filled two-thirds of the gym.

Namba, who finished with 10 points, had missed a few tough left-handed shots on drives before penetrating deep into Moanalua's zone for another lefty try that went in perfectly. That gave Roosevelt a 39-38 lead with 5 seconds left in the first overtime.

After conferring, officials put 6 seconds on the clock, which gave Funtanilla enough time to dribble coast-to-coast, launch an off-balance 15-footer from the left side and draw a foul from Ramirez as time expired.

“;I didn't listen to anybody yelling,”; Funtanilla said. “;I just focused on myself and the free throws.”;

Standing alone with a chance to win the game, Funtanilla drilled the first free throw to tie it at 39-all, but was long on the second and the game went into another extra period.

Ramirez, who was surprised by the foul call, didn't feel relieved right away.

“;If she made that (free throw), I would've been down for the count,”; she said. “;I should've played smarter. I made an error that put my team in a bad situation. It was all in their hands. I let my team down. I just wanted to get something back for our team.”;

Ramirez stepped up in the second overtime, draining a 3-pointer from the top to give the Rough Riders the lead for good, 42-41, with 3:11 to go. Roosevelt outscored the visitors 8-2 the rest of the way as Moanalua went cold from the field.

Moanalua is eliminated from the OIA playoffs, but already had a state-tourney berth sewn up.

Last night was a demonstration of impressive improvement by Na Menehune, who had lost to Roosevelt by 27- and 12-point margins during the regular season.

In fact, Moanalua kept Roosevelt's Mikela Thoemmes in check. Thoemmes, who scored a season-high 35 points against Moanalua in mid-December, was limited to nine points last night, including none in the first half against a double-teaming mix of zone defenses.

Moanalua's Achilles' heel showed again. With 1-for-7 shooting at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, Moanalua was unable to put Roosevelt away and squandered a lead that had held up since the first quarter. The visitors shot 5-for-18 from the foul line; Roosevelt was 9-for-15.

The Marauders played their biggest game of the season last night, upsetting the Mustangs in head coach Chico Furtado's final game and ending Kalaheo's season.

Waipahu, which went 3-8 in the regular season, held Kalaheo's leading scorer, Aaron Fernandez, to just eight points.

Daniel Diomanpo led Waipahu with 12 points.

The Bulldogs handed Na Alii in a lopsided defeat. Kaimuki's Mason Kualii-Moe finished with a game-high 22 points, followed by teammate Gabriel Stietzel with 16.

Chucky Kaahunui scored 19 points for Aiea.

The Bulldogs will travel to Mililani today for another playoff game.
