Saint Louis AD, football coach under fire

Change is in the air, once again, at Saint Louis.

Sources say varsity head football coach John Hao will not be asked back for next season, and athletic director Ulima Afoa has been asked to resign.

Hao, who is away on vacation this week, was surprised to hear about it.

“;We're in evaluation stage right now,”; Hao said of his position. “;I know all the teachers get evaluated, too.”;

Afoa, a Saint Louis alum in his second year at the helm, declined comment yesterday. Sources say he has refused to resign.

School president Walter Kirimitsu was not available for comment. The school office was closed yesterday for educators appreciation day. A school source said the situation should be resolved within a week to 10 days.

Hao made no bones about the possibilities.

“;I could understand if the AD let me go, because we're not winning,”; said Hao, who is 15-6 after two seasons, including 10-6 in the rugged Interscholastic League of Honolulu. “;To be at a prolific high school and not win, getting let go wouldn't hurt my feelings. If you win, enrollment comes up.”;

Hao's team finished 4-4 in the ILH (7-4 overall). The then-No. 1-ranked Crusaders started 4-0, but soon after lost to Punahou and eventual champion Kamehameha, and never fully recovered.

In his first season, Hao, a former Saint Louis and UH quarterback, guided Saint Louis to an 8-2 record (6-2 ILH), including a second-place finish in the league behind eventual state champ Punahou.

“;It all depends. The new principal has his own agenda,”; Hao said, referring to Sione Thompson, who is listed on the school Web site as vice principal of school affairs. “;You can put this in — it could turn into Saint Louis guys back-stabbing Saint Louis guys.”;

Hao replaced Delbert Tengan in 2008 after Tengan was asked to resign from one of his two head coaching positions (football or basketball). Tengan chose to step down from both instead and has remained at Saint Louis as a teacher.

Afoa took over after Todd Los Banos resigned, also in '08.

Baseball coach Duane Fraticelli was asked to step down after last season.
