ILH schools get top seeds

Punahou and Mid-Pacific are the top seeds in the state boys soccer championship this week.

Mililani, Baldwin and Kealakehe are the other top seeds in Division I, with Kapaa, Honokaa and Kailua in the top spots in Division II.

The ILH has won five straight Division I titles and one of the two Division II crowns. Punahou last won a title in 2007, while Mid-Pacific earned a state championship in 2008.

The Division I tournament begins Wednesday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park, with the Division II tournament starting Thursday at the same site.

UH men lose tennis match

The Hawaii men's tennis team ran into another tough opponent, losing to California 6-1 yesterday in Berkeley, Calif.

Leo Rosenberg earned the only point of the day for the Warriors, beating Bozhidar Katsarov 6-2, 6-2 to remain undefeated with seven wins.

The Warriors were swept in the three doubles matches and Dennis Lajola, Andreas Weber, Jeremy Tweedt, Philipp Eberhard and Daniel Llarenas all lost singles matches.

Hawaii dropped to 5-3 and will take a break before traveling to Las Vegas for a match against UNLV on March 5.

Rainbow Wahine drop pair

The Hawaii water polo team lost a pair of matches to finish sixth at the Stanford Invitational yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine lost to No. 4 California 8-7 before falling to No. 6 Michigan 11-10 in sudden death. Hawaii entered the tournament ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Leonie Van Der Molen scored five goals in the two matches and Dagmar Genee scored four.

Vulcans smack Argos around

Bryan Ngo scored 15 points and Kevin Bruce added 14 as the UH-Hilo men's basketball team beat Notre Dame de Namur 70-50 yesterday in Hilo.

The Vulcans improved to 12-7, 6-3 in the Pac West, while the Argos dropped to 2-20 and 0-11.

» Laura Zasly scored 18 points and Notre Dame de Namur (11-11, 7-4 PacWest) beat UH-Hilo (6-14, 3-6) 60-51 in the women's game.

Hawaii Pacific sweeps UH-Hilo

The Hawaii Pacific men's and women's tennis teams blitzed UH-Hilo yesterday, with the men winning 5-0 and the women prevailing 6-0.

Both HPU teams improved to 2-0, both wins coming against the Vulcans.
