Services Saturday for legislator

Services for longtime House Finance Chairman Jack Katsumi Suwa, 85, will be Saturday at 5 p.m. at Dodo Mortuary in Hilo.

Suwa, 85, was first elected to the Legislature in 1958 and served 20 years in the House of Representatives. He also served as the director of the state Department of Agriculture under Gov. George Ariyoshi and as deputy director of transportation. Suwa was also a consultant and a supervisor and executive at Puna Sugar Co. and AMFAC.

Suwa was born in Paauilo, Hawaii, and died at home in Kurtistown on Jan. 22. He is survived by wife Fusae, sons Alan and Wesley, daughters Sharon Toyota and Corinne Kalani, brother Kenneth Ebata, sister Carol Suzuki and eight grandchildren. Friends may call after 3 p.m. for Saturday's services. Attire is casual, and the family requests flowers and no monetary offerings.
